Un Malheureux appelait tous les jours
La Mort à son secours ;
« Ô Mort, lui disait-il, que tu me sembles belle !
Viens vite, viens finir ma fortune cruelle. »
La Mort crut en venant, l'obliger en effet.
Elle frappe à sa porte, elle entre, elle se montre.
« Que vois-je ! cria-t-il, ôtez-moi cet objet ;
Qu'il est hideux ! que sa rencontre
Me cause d'horreur et d'effroi !
N'approche pas, ô Mort ; ô Mort, retire-toi. »
Mécénas fut un galant homme :
Il a dit quelque part : « Qu'on me rende impotent,
Cul-de-jatte, goutteux, manchot, pourvu qu'en somme
Je vive, c'est assez, je suis plus que content. »
Ne viens jamais, ô Mort ; on t'en dit tout autant.

A wretched man called upon Death every day for help:
"Oh Death," he said, "how beautiful you seem to me!
Come quickly, come and end my cruel fate." Death believed that by coming, she would indeed be doing him a favor.
She knocks at his door, she enters, she reveals herself.
"What do I see!" he cries,
"Take away this sight; How hideous it is! Its presence fills me with horror and dread!
Do not approach, O Death; O Death, withdraw!"
Maecenas was a gallant man:
He once said, "Make me impotent, lame, crippled, as long as in the end,
I live; that's enough, I am more than content."
Never come, O Death; the same is said to you.
I.15 DER TOD UND DER UNGLÜCKLICHE

Ein unglücklicher Mann rief jeden Tag den Tod um Hilfe an:
"Oh Tod", sagte er, "wie schön erscheinst du mir!
Komm schnell, komm und beende mein grausames Schicksal."
Der Tod glaubte, indem sie kam, ihm tatsächlich einen Gefallen zu tun.
Sie klopft an seine Tür, sie tritt ein, sie zeigt sich. "Was sehe ich!" ruft er aus, "Nehmt dieses Bild von mir;
Wie abscheulich es ist! Sein Anblick erfüllt mich mit Schrecken und Angst!
Nähere dich nicht, o Tod; o Tod, zieh dich zurück!"
Maecenas war ein galanter Mann:
Er sagte einmal: "Macht mich impotent, lahm, verkrüppelt, solange ich am Ende lebe; das reicht, ich bin mehr als zufrieden."
Komm niemals, o Tod; dir wird dasselbe gesagt.
