Socrate un jour faisant bâtir,
Chacun censurait son ouvrage.
L'un trouvait les dedans, pour ne lui point mentir,
Indignes d'un tel personnage ;
L'autre blâmait la face, et tous étaient d'avis Que les appartements en étaient trop petits. Quelle maison pour lui ! L'on y tournait à peine.
« Plût au Ciel que de vrais amis,
Telle qu'elle est, dit-il, elle pût être pleine ! »
Le bon Socrate avait raison
De trouver pour ceux-là trop grande sa maison. Chacun se dit ami ; mais fol qui s'y repose :
Rien n'est plus commun que ce nom,
Rien n'est plus rare que la chose.
IV.17 SOCRATES’ WORDS

Socrates, one day, while building a house,
Everyone criticized his work.
One found the interiors, not to lie to him,
Unworthy of such a personage;
Another blamed the facade, and all were of the opinion
That the rooms were too small.
What a house for him! One could hardly turn around in it.
"May Heaven grant me true friends,
As it is," he said, "it could be full!"
Good Socrates was right
To find his house too big for those people. Everyone calls themselves a friend, but foolish is the one who relies on it:
Nothing is more common than the name,
Nothing is rarer than the thing.
IV.17 WORTE VON SOKRATES

Sokrates baute eines Tages ein Haus,
Jeder kritisierte sein Werk.
Der eine fand die Innenausstattung, um ihm nicht zu lügen,
Unwürdig einer solchen Persönlichkeit;
Ein anderer bemängelte die Fassade, und alle waren der Meinung,
Dass die Räume zu klein seien.
Was für ein Haus für ihn! Kaum konnte man sich darin umdrehen.
"Möge der Himmel mir wahre Freunde schenken,
So wie es ist", sagte er, "könnte es voll sein!" Der gute Sokrates hatte recht,
Sein Haus für jene Menschen als zu groß zu empfinden.
Jeder nennt sich einen Freund, aber töricht ist, wer darauf vertraut:
Nichts ist verbreiteter als der Name,
Nichts ist seltener als die Sache.
