V.19 LE LION S’EN ALLANT EN GUERRE

Le Lion dans sa tête avait une entreprise.
Il tint conseil de guerre, envoya ses Prévôts,
Fit avertir les animaux :
Tous furent du dessein, chacun selon sa guise.
L'Éléphant devait sur son dos
Porter l'attirail nécessaire,
Et combattre à son ordinaire,
L'Ours s'apprêter pour les assauts,
Le Renard ménager de secrètes pratiques,
Et le Singe amuser l'ennemi par ses tours.
« Renvoyez, dit quelqu'un, les Ânes qui sont lourds,
Et les Lièvres sujets à des terreurs paniques. — Point du tout, dit le Roi, je les veux employer.
Notre troupe sans eux ne serait pas complète.
L'Âne effraiera les gens, nous servant de trompette,
Et le Lièvre pourra nous servir de courrier. »
Le monarque prudent et sage
De ses moindres sujets sait tirer quelque usage,
Et connaît les divers talents :
Il n'est rien d'inutile aux personnes de sens.
V.19 THE LION GOING TO WAR

The Lion had a plan in his head.
He held a war council, sent out his scouts,
Notified the animals:
All were in agreement with the plan, each in their own way.
The Elephant was to carry
The necessary equipment on his back
And fight as usual,
The Bear was to prepare for the assaults,
The Fox was to employ secret tactics,
And the Monkey was to entertain the enemy with his tricks.
"Send away the Donkeys," someone said, "they are cumbersome,
And the Hares are prone to panic."
- "Not at all," said the King, "I want to employ them.
Our troop would not be complete without them.
The Donkey will scare the people, serving as our trumpet,
And the Hare can serve as our messenger."
The prudent and wise monarch
Knows how to make use of even his least subjects,
And understands their diverse talents:
There is nothing useless to people of sense.
V.19 DER LÖWE ZIEHT IN DEN KRIEG

Der Löwe hatte einen Plan in seinem Kopf.
Er hielt einen Kriegsrat ab, schickte seine Vorhut aus,
Lies die Tiere benachrichtigen:
Alle waren mit dem Vorhaben einverstanden, jeder auf seine Weise.
Der Elefant sollte auf seinem Rücken
Die notwendige Ausrüstung tragen
Und wie gewohnt kämpfen,
Der Bär sollte sich auf die Angriffe vorbereiten,
Der Fuchs sollte heimliche Praktiken anwenden,
Und der Affe sollte den Feind mit seinen Kunststücken unterhalten.
"Schickt die Esel weg", sagte jemand, "sie sind schwerfällig,
Und die Hasen sind panische Angsthasen."
- "Keineswegs", sagte der König, "ich möchte sie einsetzen.
Unsere Truppe wäre ohne sie nicht vollständig.
Der Esel wird die Leute erschrecken und uns als Trompete dienen,
Und der Hase kann als Bote dienen."
Der kluge und weise Monarch
Kann von seinen geringsten Untertanen Nutzen ziehen
Und kennt ihre verschiedenen Talente:
Es gibt nichts Nutzloses für vernünftige Menschen.
